Wild Wild West (1999). Hot Hot Mess.
#willsmith #wildwildwest
Stam Fine Reviews takes in a deep breath to look at Wild Wild West for the arbitrary reason that the film came out 25 years ago. Wild Wild West resurrected a 60's spy/western hybrid series as a summer blockbuster, reuniting the director and star of Men in Black and turned out to be an expensive movie that didn't quite light the box office on fire. It was successful, just not successful enough to recoup its enormous budget.
Stars Will Smith, Kevin Kline, Kenneth Branagh, Salma Hayek, Ted Levine. Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld.

The radio series is my definitive version, followed by the books, then the TV series. The film is awful - I understand why they aimed it at a more American audience but all the British eccentricity was lost. I still have all my cassette recordings of the original radio broadcasts and they still sound great.

As a Pen and Paper Roleplayer since 1982 at the age of 11, all of my fellow Roleplayers over the decades have agreed that this is a Perfect 'Roleplayer's Film'. Even though the filmmakers weren't gamers, they still managed to capture the 'Romp of the Imagination' that is the cornerstone of what makes PnP RPG's so compelling.

The song Wild Wild West sampled a Stevie Wonder tune, so of course it slaps. :D Also, Will Smith is such a charismatic actor (his real-life antics notwithstanding) that this movie is still watchable, even if not very good. Plus...Salma Hayek.

Huge fan of the comic and Dave Stevens so I saw this right when it came out (it was the first film shown at the then newly restored El Capitan theater) I absolutely loved this film even though they toned down the character of Bettie Page to Jenny Blake. I recognise it isn't a "great movie". Having since seen the TV show it was based loosely on, I can even see it was a terrible movie adaptation of a pretty cool show. But - and this is important - there is a 15 year old version of me who couldn't get enough of this movie when it came out back in the day, and for 40+ year old me it'll always be a guilty pleasure. For better ir worse, I can sit down with this movie any time and enjoy it as much as the first time I ever saw it.

It appears to have been made by people who never actually watched the show, which, BTW, was heavily in syndication in the 70s. The script is garbage. The special effects are not good, as was pointed out by critics at the time. Most of the roles were miscast. Salma had already done Desparado, From Dusk Till Dawn, Fools Rush In, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Faculty, Dogma and many others. The idea of Artemis in drag was actually based on a joke made by Robert Conrad to the makers of the TV movie The Wild Wild West Revisited (1979). They hadn't watched the series so they didn't know it was a joke and used it in the movie.

I grew up with the original series, in syndication (I was an infant and toddler, when it was in its original run), which was fantastic. Well written, imaginative and with great actors doing their thing. This was complete shit; poorly written, crude, dodgy effects, and a cast of actors tying to polish a turd. An Evening With Kevin Smith highlights the central problem: Jon Peters. His bad decisions and obsessions threw this down a sinkhole. The sad thing is that if they had been true to the series, it could have done great business and had a lower budget. It's a litany of Hollywood excess. The series was hardly forgotten, though. It lived in syndication through the 70s and had a pair of reunion movies, which were highly rated, in the 80s. It was being shown on the TNT network (if memory serves), to great numbers. Watch the original series, especially the Dr Loveless episodes and then compare Michael Dunn to Kenneth Branaugh. Dunn, as Loveless, was a fine actor, with wit and charm, a beautiful singing voice and he relished the part. Loveless was a rare sympathetic (or almost sympathetic) villain, who had cause to rail at a world the devalued him, because of his size. His Dr Loveless, no matter how extreme, was believable. Don't get me started comparing Ross Martin to Kevin Kline. I like Kline, but he does not compare well. Much was made of the idea of a black secret agent, in the period of the film and it would have meaning, if this had any sense of reality; but, it is pure fantasy, so you can let it slide. Problem is, this Jim West is an obnoxious jerk, which doesn't endear him to audiences. Robert Conrad's Jim West was smooth and deadly, with just the right amount of smirk. I went with friends, to see the movie, which is the only reason I didn't walk out.

The Two Doctors makes terrible use of Troughton. He’s the star of the show in the opening scenes in the space station. But then he’s incarcerated and then he gets turned into an Androgum so he’s not even exhibiting the personality that was so fun to revisit in The Three Doctors. His character is also more abrasive and less playful and whimsical than we are used to.

I was a teenager when this movie came out and I enjoyed the hell out of its first summer on HBO. The chemistry between West and Artemis wasn’t great but there were plenty of good jokes in this movie. Kenneth Branagh’s Loveless was on par with Gary Oldman’s Zorg from the fifth element and you get to see Selma Hayak’s ass. Better lead casting might have made this a totally different movie.
